Advent Calendar, Day 23: Nina Machlin Dayton

Meiju Knits Advent Calendar 2015, Day 23: Nina Machlin Dayton

(Photo by Nina Machlin Dayton Designs)

Last but not least I would like you to meet one of the persons behind Gift-A-Long event. She is Nina Machlin Dayton, creative, compassionate, empowering person who works countless hours to make this event possible. As a fellow knitter and designer, I feel very grateful that there are people who make this happen. She thinks that Gift-A-Long is a great way to give back to the design community and to the community of customers who support indie designers and what we do.

Nina's designs are timeless, engaging and fun. Her portfolio is full of designs that would make perfect gifts.

Ravelry name: ninaknits
Designer name: Nina Machlin Dayton

Nina tells about herself:
I first learned to knit when I was 10 years old - just knit; not purl, cast-on, bind off, etc. After working endlessly on an enormous purple garter stitch muffler for my father I gave up. Then in my early 20’s I was dating a man whose mother and grandmother were enthusiastic knitters, and so, to get in their good graces, I asked them to teach me to knit. It was instant addiction. While that boyfriend didn’t last the knitting obsession did and 35+ years later is still going strong. My grandmother and mother were and are amazingly talented with any form of needlecraft, so maybe I come by the passion genetically.

I have been teaching and designing for over 30 years. I try to write my patterns with a clarity that makes them accessible to people at all skill levels - I believe that the best way to learn is to jump in with a pattern that you love, and I want to make sure that anyone can follow and make my patterns, even if they have never done a technique it uses before. I offer pattern support for all my designs and love to hear from people working on them.

Advent Calendar, Day 22: Aet Terasmaa

Meiju Knits Advent Calendar 2015, Day 22: Aet Terasmaa

Beanies, mittens, shawls. You never can't have enough of them. Aet's designs are simple, straightforward and interesting to knit. She tries stitches that are new to her, boldly, but yet makes patterns that are easy to follow.

Ravelry name: Asti
Designer name: Aet Terasmaa

Asti tells about herself: Although I studied physics at university to become a physics teacher, I realized after having kids that I actually want to do something entirely different. I have been a fan of knitting and crocheting since childhood. I knitted my first simple rib scarf in kindergarten. During the years in secondary school I crocheted a lot of doilies and knitted sweaters for myself. So after staying home with kids for 6 years and working in LYS for 4 years after that I decided it was time to follow my passion. I’m full of new ideas, I just wish there was more hours in a day. :)

Advent Calendar Day 15: Faye Kennington

Meiju Knits Advent Calendar, Day 15: Faye Kennington

Faye Kennington is one of the designers behind Gift-A-Long event. This is something that these designers do without any payment and as voluntary. Me and I believe that other designers too are really grateful for all the effort, time and input that GAL organizers put into this event. Faye's designs are colorful, eclectic and quick-knits. If you still have a few gifts to do, choose e.g. Faye's (2 Hour) Artist's Loop

Ravelry name: UkeeKnits
Designer name: Faye Kennington
Link to your designer page on Ravelry:

About: Faye Kennington is an obsessive knitter that lives on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. She wanted to be a Shoe Designer when she was growing up and went to Fashion Design School in her early years. Yet somehow, she worked as a Human Resources Manager in the Engineering Industry for 10 years. It turns out that a background in speadsheets and fashion is a good combination for a knitwear designer.

Faye Kennington has been involved with the Indie Design Gift-a-long since the moment in 2013 when organizers began discussing the need for graphic marketing components. For the past 3 years, she has helped coordinate the graphics for advertising and organize a variety of social media promotional activities for the GAL.

She thinks the best thing about the Indie Design Gift-a-long is the opportunity for Participating Designers to make connections and support each other. Every year she has made new friends in the design community. The chances to work a team can be few and far between for an independent designer and the gift-a-long provides that feeling of camaraderie and group synergy that can be hard to emulate as a party of one.

She spins as well as knits, though not efficiently enough for it to be particularly useful!

Advent Calendar, Day 11: Color Book Holiday Shawl

Meiju Knits Advent Calendar 2015, Day 11: Color Book Holiday Shawl

Last summer we had holiday plans with my family and I wanted to have a project that would be fun, enjoyable and interesting to knit but yet and easy to do while reading the map or watching and chatting with the kids. I chose bright colors and had fun. This is a very simple side to side shawl with stripes which are always fun and pattern in which you don't have to cut yarns until the end (I hate weaving millions of ends). Yarn used is fingering weight. Now that holidays are coming I recommend taking a holiday project just for you, this is fun and interesting but yer easy enough to do while watching tv.

The shawl is huge, it uses one skein of the most dominant color (light grey) in my shawl and other colors approximately half skein of each. This was really fun to knit, easy but not boring at all.

Pattern: Color Book Holiday Shawl by Meiju K-P
Yarn: Madelinetosh tosh merino light, Dibadu Funnies Simply Merino
Needles: US4/3,5 mm & US6/4mm
Prize: € 4.50

You will get 24% off from this pattern with coupon code "holiday" until 23:59 of Eastern time today!

Ohje saatavilla myös suomeksi!

Advent Calendar Day 2: Hanna Maciejewska

Meiju Knits Advent Calendar Day 2: Featuring Hanna Maciejewska

(Photo Hanna Maciejewska)

My series of featured designers begins with Hanna Maciejewska. Hanna's designs are full of beautiful, lovely details and her strength are amazing sweaters. Her designs are seamless (always my favorite, mostly top-down and very feminine).

Ravelry Name: Hada131
Designer Name: Hanna Maciejewska
Ravelry designer page:

Hanna tells about herself: "I am a proud mother of a beautiful girl who sometimes draws things for me to knit. My husband is very supportive of my knitting and designing hobby and extremely helpful with computer questions. He doesn’t knit, though!

My grandmother taught me how to knit when I was a little girl. In High School, I knit sweaters all the time – all my own creations, but only a few years ago I realized that knitting and designing knitwear is truly my biggest passion!

Since there are countless new ideas in my head at any given time, I prefer to construct my garments and accessories as smartly and seamlessly as possible to save time on finishing and move on to the next idea.
If I like a certain feature with a garment, for instance a special neckline or certain type of fit, I might revisit that idea later and explore it further with a new design. However, I tend to not repeat stitch patterns unless in matching sets.
I do love nature, especially the mountains. How I wished I lived closer to them! Nature and time spent in my garden always provide me with an abundance of inspiration, not by directly copying what I see, but rather by providing impressions and memories to draw upon later.

One of my favorite parts of designing, is getting to work with so many wonderful people.
I especially cherish the international friendship aspect of being a designer, getting to know knitters in different countries and being able to collaborate with other designers, knitting magazines, and fiber artists."

Advent Calendar Day 1: New patterns!

Meiju Knits Advent Calendar 2015, Day 1:

New patterns: Summa Stripes Shawl / Kiela Hat / Kiela Mittens

(Photos by Tanu Kallio. Visit Ravelry pattern pages for more photos, here, here and here.)

What would be a better gift to a knitter friend than yarn & pattern set? These patterns are a collaboration with Lanitium ex Machina and are available from Lanitium ex Machinas shop as follows:
- For over 30 euros purchase choice of one (1) free patterns above
- For over 60 euros purchase choice of two (2) free patterns above
- For over 90 euros purchase choice of three (3) free patterns above

This offer is valid until 24th of December (2015). Note that Lanitium ex Machina is having their own Christmas Calendar with lots of discounts and yarn sales!
These patterns will be available as individual purchases in my Ravelry Shop later.

If you want to knit the accessories by yourself and gift the finished shawl, beanie or mittens, it is okay too. These are perfect last minute gifts, you will make them in 2-3 nights. Worked with dk-weight yarn these will be finished in no time. I chose the color "grellow", the combination of yellow and dark grey, colors that go with anything for the shawl and lighter grey for the hat and beanie.

The shawl is worked in one piece and using techniques in which you don't have to cut yarns and there will be minimal finishing. The cable charts in hat and mittens are charted and written out. The hat chart is contiguous, it is the same all around the hat.

Pattern: Summa Stripes Shawl by Meiju K-P
Yarn: Lanitium ex Machina Merino DK Twist, colors Dijon and Charcoal.
Needles: US7/4,5 mm

Yarn: Lanitium ex Machina Merino DK Twist, colorway Sterling
Needles: US4/3,5 mm & US6/4 mm

- Yli 30 euron ostoksiin yksi (1) valitsemasi ohje ylläolevista ilmaiseksi
- Yli 60 euron ostoksiin kaksi (2) valitsemaasi ohjetta ylläolevista ilmaiseksi
- Yli 90 euron ostoksiin kolme (3) valitsemaasi ohjetta ylläolevista ilmaiseksi

Tarjous on voimassa 24.12.2015 asti.
